Jebel Ali is one of the founding chapters of modern Dubai. The area began as a sparsely inhabited stretch of coast and was developed from the 1970s as part of a state directed plan to move Dubai's economy beyond oil. Sheikh Rashid announced a new city, airport and seaport at Jebel Ali around 1977, port construction commenced the same year, and the port formally opened in 1979. The original Jebel Ali Village came up in 1977 to house the staff building the port, which makes it one of the first residential communities in the city.
Today the wider Jebel Ali area holds a population of 540,732 as of 2024 and takes in Jebel Ali Port, the JAFZA Free Zone, Palm Jebel Ali offshore, Expo City Dubai and Dubai Investment Park. What started as worker housing on a remote hill has turned into a full district where industry, trade and family living run side by side, and where demand for apartments for sale in Jebel Ali keeps rising with every new phase.
