Dubai Resilence Shines through Heavy Rainfall

We are living in a world of uncertainty. No matter how much we have advanced, we are still not able to predict the intensity of nature's calamity, its duration, and its impact, even the stronger forces defeated by nature.

Humans might be capable of creating magic, building massive buildings, and becoming advanced, and yet before nature, Humans are nothing more than mere creatures.

14th April 2024, a nightmare for Dubai

Recent phenomena proved this statement true. On April 14, Dubai witnessed one of the heaviest rainfalls since 1947; the entire world had seen the devastation and cruelty of nature. It is the most shocking and unbelievable incident in the world because Dubai has an arid desert climate, which means here, people hardly see rainfall. This land experienced the driest and hottest climate throughout the year, but on this day Dubai saw rain—not the normal rain that brings happiness but the deadliest one—a year's worth of rain in less than a day.

Dubai has scorching summer weather the entire year but the advanced technology here creates a livable environment, its excellent architecture keeps hot weather outside the door, and artificial islands and lakes cool people's minds.

Their architectural style

Dubai's architecture is one of the most advanced and is praised all over the world. Many engineers get inspiration from it and want to build iconic projects like them such as Palm Jumeirah, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Creek Harbour, and many more. Though they attained perfection in almost every sector but still they are lacking in the management of drainage systems, for them it is a waste of time and no use, cause this land hardly gets rainfall, and here, water logging was not a major threat. To become more efficient and to save time, Dubai engineers skipped the drainage part.

As I said earlier, nature cannot be predicated and we have studied about nature uncertainty in history books. Dubai saw one of the heaviest rainfalls, and Dubai’s drainage was not capable of handling that much water. As a result, most of Dubai's parts were covered with water, roads and buildings were submerged, creating chaos and fear among the citizens.

Wherever there's a challenge, there's an opportunity for a solution! No nation is perfect, and when it comes to nature, we are all vulnerable. While we cannot alter nature's adversities, we possess the ability to mitigate their effects. Dubai's rapid response effectively managed the situation, minimizing its impact. Authorities have not provided comprehensive data on the flood's toll, which tragically claimed at least one life.

This blog provides a glimpse into Dubai's management authority and its adept handling of the recent drainage disaster.

Below are some measures implemented by the Dubai government to mitigate the impact of natural disasters:

Communication

For handling any situation, quick and clear communication is very important. In this kind of situation, rumors spread very quickly, and people get terrified easily. To stay away from any rumors, Dubai has taken immediate action. The moment Dubai government get information about a massive storm that forecasters had been warning about for days blew through the country, they took immediate action, without wasting too much time, the Dubai government altered their citizens, circulated warnings across the UAE, and requested their citizens stay at home. Either schools and offices were closed or they opted for remote work, and many fights were canceled.

Quick action from the emergency worker

The emergency workers in Dubai handled the situation quickly. Rescue operations were started at the earliest, and when the situation was controlled, they started cleaning the roads and city so that everything went back to normal, roads and buildings were repaired, debris was removed, and people in need got their help. Those who were stuck in it were moved to a safer place. In matter of weeks, Dubai got back its old vibes, charm, and vibrancy.

A festival atmosphere

Dubai floods might be a nightmare for some, but young people see them as an opportunity to enjoy their inner child. Where many people were scared and refused to go out, young people, who were not able to connect with their remote work because of no electricity, were captured enjoying various games in a water-logged neighborhood.

Social media is flooded with pictures of enjoyment. You can easily spot kids and young people playing in the water; some are seen boating, others are crafting and swimming.

Their fun pictures reassured the normalcy and calmness of the Dubai people. They might not have been prepared for it, but they didn’t let problems get into their heads.

Resilience

Dubai Engineering's quick response to the unexpected flood highlights its dedication to excellence and commitment to its community's well-being. By promptly cleaning debris, repairing damages, and pledging to enhance the drainage system, they demonstrate proactive measures to prevent future occurrences. Offering free repairs to affected buildings and distributing food relief reflects their compassion and support for those affected.

The Dubai government's acknowledgment of the flood as a new challenge underscores the importance of learning from such events and preparing for future contingencies. Modern, innovative gadgets and modern machinery to tackle waterlogged areas showcase their adaptability and readiness to address crises effectively. The rapid transformation from a flood-stricken to a functional city illustrates Dubai's resilience and determination to overcome adversity.

Conclusion

As mentioned previously, while we cannot control nature, we can certainly mitigate its impact. Dubai is gearing up to confront potential future rainfall events, according to recent news Dubai might see similar situations occurring again. Learning from past mistakes, Dubai is actively preparing to address natural hazards and minimize their consequences.
